A quiet suburban neighborhood was thrown into chaos after a teen accidentally called 911 during an intense gaming session — and officers arrived to find a situation far different from what they expected.
According to police reports, dispatchers received a frantic call late at night from a phone that appeared to be coming from a local residence. On the other end of the line, a teenage boy’s voice could be heard saying something that immediately raised alarms: “I just Klled two people.”*
Before the operator could respond, the call disconnected.
Believing they might be dealing with a serious crime, authorities rushed to the location within minutes. The home’s security footage, later released by neighbors, showed several police vehicles pulling into the driveway as officers surrounded the property, prepared for the worst.
Inside, however, was a very different scene. The teenager — confused and terrified — opened the door wearing headphones and holding a gaming controller.
After officers detained him for questioning, it became clear what had happened. The teen had been playing an online multiplayer game, shouting into his headset during an emotional moment of the match. At one point, he had apparently “butt-dialed” 911, and the device stayed connected long enough for dispatchers to hear the alarming statement.
The line went silent right after the “confession,” triggering an urgent police response.
Once officers verified that no one was harmed and that the statement had been taken out of gaming context, the teen was released without charges. The local police department later confirmed that it was a misunderstanding, but also used the incident as an opportunity to warn the public about how easily emergency systems can be accidentally activated.
“We’re just thankful this turned out to be a false alarm,” said the responding officer. “But in situations like these, we always have to assume it’s real until proven otherwise.”
The boy’s parents, who were asleep at the time, said they woke up to police lights outside their house and were shocked to find their son surrounded by officers. “It was terrifying — but we understand they were just doing their job,” the mother told reporters.
Online, the story sparked a wave of reactions — from sympathy to humor. Many gamers admitted they’d shouted similar phrases during gameplay without realizing how they might sound out of context. “Imagine explaining that to the cops — ‘No, sir, I was playing Call of Duty,’” one user commented.
Police later reminded citizens that accidental 911 calls are more common than people think, often caused by phones in pockets or smart devices activating unintentionally. Dispatchers treat every call seriously, as ignoring one could have fatal consequences.
While the incident ended safely, it served as a wake-up call for parents and gamers alike: always make sure your phone is locked — and remember, your virtual actions can have very real consequences.
