A Michigan police department is under intense public scrutiny after disturbing footage surfaced showing an officer cutting off a woman’s sewn-on hair weave during booking. The woman, a Detroit mother, was seen restrained in a chair while the officer used scissors to remove her extensions — a move critics are calling a clear violation of her dignity and rights.

The incident occurred at the Warren Police Department during a standard intake procedure following the woman’s arrest on a misdemeanor charge. Surveillance video shows the officer approaching the detainee, who appeared visibly distressed, before forcibly cutting through her hairpiece despite her repeated objections. “Please, don’t cut it — it’s sewn in!” the woman can be heard pleading in the video.

Instead of halting, the officer continued to cut, explaining that “jail policy” required the removal of anything that could be considered a potential hazard. However, the department’s official policy reportedly makes no mention of forcibly removing sewn-in or glued extensions unless they pose a demonstrable safety risk — something civil rights advocates argue was clearly not the case here.

The footage quickly spread across social media, sparking national outrage and renewed discussions about racial bias and the treatment of Black women in police custody. “This wasn’t about safety,” one activist posted. “This was about control, humiliation, and a complete disregard for cultural identity.”

Attorneys representing the woman have since filed a formal complaint and are preparing a civil rights lawsuit against the department. “Our client was traumatized,” her lawyer said in a statement. “Her hair is part of her identity — part of her confidence. To have it cut off without consent, while she was restrained, is beyond unacceptable. It’s dehumanizing.”

Warren’s police chief responded at a press conference, acknowledging the growing backlash and announcing an internal investigation. “We are taking this very seriously,” he said. “The actions of our officers will be reviewed in full, and disciplinary action will be taken if policy violations are found.”

Community leaders in Detroit and Warren have joined forces to demand accountability and updated training protocols focused on cultural sensitivity and respectful handling of detainees. “This incident shows how systemic bias can manifest in everyday procedures,” said Rev. Anthony Brown, a local civil rights advocate. “It’s not just about one haircut — it’s about power, respect, and humanity.”

Meanwhile, the woman at the center of the controversy says she remains deeply shaken. In a brief statement shared through her attorney, she said, “I felt powerless. They took something from me that wasn’t theirs to take.”

As protests and online petitions gain momentum, calls for the officer’s termination continue to grow louder. The case has become yet another flashpoint in the ongoing national conversation about policing practices, race, and dignity.

One message from a local rally summed up the public sentiment best:
“It’s not just hair — it’s identity. And no badge gives the right to strip that away.”
