State of Mexico — A serious traffic accident caused major disruption this Wednesday, November 20, after a trailer lost control and triggered a multi-vehicle collision on the Mexico–Querétaro Highway, one of the busiest roadways connecting central Mexico.
The incident occurred at kilometer 059+000 near the municipality of Huehuetoca, where a trailer traveling toward Mexico City was unable to stop in time as it approached the Jorobas intersection. According to preliminary reports, the driver attempted to brake but lost control, first crashing into a roadside embankment before colliding with several vehicles traveling ahead.
Authorities confirmed that the trailer struck at least five passenger cars and one pickup truck. The force of the impact caused the trailer to jackknife and end up positioned sideways across the highway, blocking all three north-to-south lanes. The collision resulted in a partial closure of the road and severe traffic congestion that extended for several kilometers.
Drivers in the area reported long delays as emergency crews worked to secure the scene and redirect traffic. Some motorists were stranded for hours while authorities assessed the situation and began clearing damaged vehicles from the roadway.
Emergency response teams, including paramedics and traffic police, arrived quickly at the scene. Several individuals involved in the collision were treated on-site for minor injuries such as bruises, cuts, and shock. While no life-threatening injuries were reported, paramedics advised some of the injured to seek further medical evaluation at nearby hospitals as a precaution.
Officials stated that the rapid response helped prevent the situation from becoming more serious, especially given the number of vehicles involved and the size of the trailer.
Although the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, authorities believe weather conditions may have been a contributing factor. Rain earlier in the day left the roadway wet and slippery, reducing tire traction and increasing stopping distances for large vehicles. Investigators are examining whether speed, braking distance, or mechanical issues also played a role.
Traffic authorities reminded drivers that heavy vehicles, especially trailers and trucks, require longer distances to stop — a risk that increases significantly on wet roads. Even a brief delay in braking can result in devastating consequences when conditions are unfavorable.
As crews worked to remove the trailer and damaged vehicles, officials implemented temporary traffic diversions to ease congestion. Drivers were urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes while cleanup operations continued.
The Mexico–Querétaro Highway is a critical transportation corridor used daily by commuters, freight carriers, and travelers. Accidents along this route frequently cause widespread delays due to the high volume of traffic and limited detour options.
In the aftermath of the crash, authorities issued renewed safety recommendations to drivers, particularly during rainy conditions. They advised motorists to reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, and remain alert near major intersections such as Jorobas, where traffic often slows unexpectedly.
For truck drivers, officials emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, brake inspections, and strict adherence to speed limits — especially when hauling heavy loads.
By late afternoon, efforts were underway to fully reopen the affected lanes, though officials warned that residual traffic delays could persist into the evening hours.
Fortunately, no fatalities were reported in the incident. However, the crash serves as a stark reminder of how quickly road conditions and momentary miscalculations can lead to large-scale accidents.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are expected to release further details once the inquiry is complete.
