A shocking case of privacy invasion unfolded at a Target store in Arizona, where a male employee was arrested for allegedly filming a 12-year-old girl inside a dressing room. The incident has sparked outrage across social media and renewed calls for stronger protections in public fitting areas.

According to the local police department, the arrest came after the young girl’s mother noticed something unusual while shopping with her daughter. “She saw a reflection of a phone near the bottom of the door,” investigators said. “When she realized someone was recording, she screamed for help.”

Store security immediately intervened, detaining the employee until police arrived. Bodycam footage later released by authorities shows officers confronting the suspect, who appeared visibly nervous as they escorted him out of the store in handcuffs.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old store associate Daniel Brooks, now faces multiple felony charges, including invasion of privacy and production of illegal recordings involving a minor. Detectives say evidence collected from his phone suggests this may not have been an isolated incident.

“This is a deeply disturbing violation of trust,” said Police Chief Laura Mendoza during a press briefing. “Parents should never have to worry that their children are being recorded while trying on clothes. We’re investigating whether similar incidents may have occurred elsewhere.”

Target released an official statement expressing shock and condemnation, assuring the public that the suspect was immediately terminated. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement,” the company said. “The safety and privacy of our guests is our top priority, and we are reviewing all internal security procedures to ensure this never happens again.”

The child’s mother, whose identity is being withheld for privacy reasons, described the ordeal as “every parent’s nightmare.” In a brief statement, she said, “My daughter is traumatized. She keeps asking why someone would do that. No child should go through this.”

Experts say the incident highlights the growing concern over hidden cameras in changing rooms and public spaces, especially with the increasing availability of miniature recording devices. Cyber safety advocate Dr. Nathan Perez noted, “Even in major retail chains with strong policies, predators can exploit moments of privacy. It’s a reminder that vigilance and technology checks must go hand in hand.”

Lawmakers and consumer advocates have since renewed calls for stricter surveillance and staff screening policies in retail stores. Several U.S. states, including Florida and California, have recently introduced tougher penalties for secret recording in areas where people expect privacy.

Online, the public reaction has been one of anger and heartbreak. “This is beyond unacceptable,” one user commented. “You go to a store thinking it’s safe, and something like this happens. Target should be held accountable, too.”

As the investigation continues, the victim’s family is urging other parents to speak to their children about privacy and safety — especially in places where they may be most vulnerable.

“This could have been anyone’s child,” the mother said. “I just hope justice is served.”
