State of Mexico — A serious multi-vehicle accident disrupted traffic and caused widespread concern on Wednesday, November 20, after a trailer truck collided with several vehicles on the Mexico–Querétaro Highway at kilometer 059+000, in the municipality of Huehuetoca.

According to early reports from local authorities, the accident occurred during peak daytime traffic, when hundreds of vehicles were traveling through the area. Witnesses stated that the trailer was moving at considerable speed when it failed to stop in time, crashing into multiple cars ahead of it.

The impact was severe.

The trailer lost control and ended up positioned sideways across the highway, blocking all three north-to-south lanes. This resulted in a partial closure of one of the most important transportation routes connecting central Mexico with the Bajío region, triggering long delays that extended for several kilometers.

Emergency services, including highway patrol officers, firefighters, and paramedics, were dispatched to the scene within minutes. Traffic authorities worked quickly to redirect vehicles and prevent further collisions, while rescue teams assessed the condition of those involved.

Possible Causes of the Accident

Although the official investigation is still ongoing, authorities have outlined several factors that may have contributed to the collision.

One of the main possibilities is excessive speed. Preliminary assessments suggest that the trailer driver may not have maintained a safe distance from the vehicles ahead, making it impossible to brake in time when traffic slowed.

Another potential cause is mechanical failure, particularly involving the braking system. Heavy transport vehicles rely heavily on well-maintained brakes, and any malfunction can significantly reduce stopping power, especially when traveling downhill or carrying a full load.

Weather conditions may have also played a role. Some drivers reported light rain earlier in the day, which could have made the road surface slippery and reduced tire traction. Even a small decrease in friction can dramatically affect the stopping distance of large trucks.

Driver fatigue is also being considered. Long-haul drivers often travel extended hours, and exhaustion can impair reaction time and judgment. Authorities are reviewing the driver’s work schedule and rest periods to determine whether fatigue contributed to the incident.

Finally, traffic congestion in the area may have been a critical factor. The Mexico–Querétaro Highway is known for heavy commercial and commuter traffic, particularly during weekdays. Sudden slowdowns are common, and drivers who fail to adjust their speed accordingly can easily trigger chain-reaction crashes.

Impact and Response

Several vehicles sustained significant damage, though initial reports indicate that most occupants suffered only minor injuries. A small number of people were transported to nearby hospitals for evaluation as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, no fatalities had been confirmed at the time of reporting.

Highway maintenance crews worked for hours to remove the damaged vehicles and clear debris from the roadway. A crane was required to reposition and tow the trailer, which had become lodged across multiple lanes.

Traffic congestion persisted throughout the afternoon and early evening, with some drivers reporting delays of more than two hours.

Authorities Urge Caution

In the aftermath of the accident, transportation officials renewed their call for caution, particularly among operators of heavy vehicles.

“This type of incident highlights the importance of maintaining safe speeds, performing regular mechanical checks, and staying alert at all times,” a highway safety spokesperson said.

Investigators will continue examining the vehicle, reviewing surveillance footage, and collecting witness statements to determine the exact cause of the collision. If negligence or mechanical violations are confirmed, legal action may follow.

A Reminder of Road Safety Risks

The accident serves as another reminder of the dangers present on major highways, where a single mistake can affect dozens of people within seconds.

As traffic returned to normal later that evening, authorities emphasized that preventing similar incidents requires cooperation from both drivers and transport companies — through responsible driving, proper vehicle maintenance, and strict adherence to safety regulations.

For now, residents and commuters in the region remain shaken by the dramatic scene, hoping that future measures will help reduce the risk of such dangerous collisions on one of Mexico’s busiest roads.
