Two children in Nevada are safe today after a horrifying car crash caused by what police are calling “one of the most extreme cases of driver negligence” they’ve ever seen. The mother, who was allegedly under the influence and driving at excessive speed, lost control of her vehicle before crashing into a utility pole. Miraculously, both children survived thanks to quick-thinking officers who arrived within minutes.

The incident unfolded late Saturday evening when dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting a sedan swerving across lanes on Highway 95. Witnesses described the driver as “reckless” and “barely keeping the car on the road.” Moments later, the vehicle veered off course and slammed into a light pole near a motel parking lot.

When police arrived, they found the car’s front end destroyed and the children — ages 6 and 8 — crying in the back seat. Both had been restrained improperly, with one child not wearing a seatbelt at all. Officers immediately removed them from the car and began first aid while calling for paramedics.

Bodycam footage shows the chaotic aftermath: smoke rising from the hood, the mother stumbling outside, and officers rushing to comfort the terrified kids. “It’s okay, you’re safe now,” one officer can be heard saying as he wraps a blanket around the younger child.

Authorities later confirmed that the mother, 34-year-old Amber Lewis, had a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit and had also tested positive for a controlled substance. She was arrested at the scene on charges of child endangerment, DUI, and reckless driving.

“This could’ve ended in tragedy,” said Police Sergeant Ethan Cole, one of the first responders. “Those kids are lucky to be alive. Seatbelts saved their lives — and the officers on scene acted fast enough to prevent something far worse.”

Witnesses nearby said the children were visibly shaken but grateful. One motel guest told reporters, “The little girl just kept asking for her dad. The officers were so gentle with them, like they were their own kids.”

Child Protective Services has since taken custody of the children, and family members are being contacted to arrange long-term care. Officials say the children suffered minor injuries but are expected to make a full recovery.

Community members have reacted strongly to the story, with many calling for harsher penalties for parents who put their kids at risk. “It’s heartbreaking,” one commenter wrote online. “Those babies didn’t ask for this. Thank God the police got there when they did.”

The department released a public statement reminding drivers that every second counts behind the wheel — especially with children in the car. “Never drive under the influence. Never take chances. The consequences can be irreversible,” it read.

As the investigation continues, one thing remains clear — the officers’ fast action and compassion turned a near-tragedy into a story of survival.
