A heartbreaking incident in Oklahoma City has led to the arrest of a 32-year-old father who allegedly abandoned his 5-year-old daughter outside a children’s learning center in freezing nighttime temperatures.

According to police, surveillance footage shows the little girl sitting alone outside the building, shivering and calling for her dad. The video, which has since gone viral, shows the child clutching a small backpack as she waits near the locked entrance for more than 40 minutes before being found by a passerby.

Authorities said the temperature that night had dropped to below 40°F (4°C), and the girl was dressed in only a thin jacket and leggings.

“It’s absolutely heartbreaking,” said Officer Maria Gonzalez of the Oklahoma City Police Department. “When we found her, she was cold, scared, and confused — she kept asking when her daddy was coming back.”

The child was immediately taken to a local hospital for evaluation and later placed under the care of Child Protective Services. Thankfully, doctors confirmed that she did not suffer any serious injuries but had mild hypothermia from prolonged exposure.

Investigators later identified the father as James Turner, who reportedly told police that he “didn’t think it would take long” and that he left his daughter outside while he “ran an errand.” However, police said Turner never returned.

“There’s no excuse for leaving a child unattended — especially in the cold, at night,” said Detective Harold Price, who is leading the investigation. “This could have ended in tragedy.”

Witnesses told police they saw a vehicle matching Turner’s description drive away from the area around 10:45 p.m. One woman, who was walking her dog nearby, said she noticed the girl crying and immediately called 911.

“She was sitting on the ground, hugging her knees,” the witness said. “I thought maybe her parents were just inside, but something didn’t feel right. Thank God I stopped.”

Turner was arrested the following morning at his residence without incident. He now faces multiple charges, including child endangerment and neglect. Police also revealed that he has a prior record involving domestic disturbances.

Community members have since rallied around the young girl, donating clothing, toys, and blankets. Local advocacy groups are calling for stronger penalties in cases of child abandonment.

“Too often, these children are left defenseless in dangerous conditions,” said Megan Lewis, a child welfare advocate. “This could have easily been another heartbreaking headline.”

The child remains in protective custody while officials determine long-term arrangements for her care. Authorities have confirmed that her mother, who lives out of state, has been notified.

In a statement, the Oklahoma City Police Department praised the quick actions of the passerby and reminded the public to always intervene if they see a child in distress.

“If you see something that doesn’t look right — speak up,” Officer Gonzalez said. “You could save a life.”

Turner remains in custody, awaiting a court appearance later this week.
