A man’s quiet afternoon of car maintenance turned into a bizarre arrest after police mistook him for someone behaving suspiciously — all while he was simply adding oil to his car.
The incident, captured on bodycam, has since gone viral, sparking outrage and disbelief across social media. Viewers were stunned to see an innocent driver handcuffed on the side of the road for what appeared to be no crime at all.
According to reports, the man had pulled over near an apartment complex parking lot to top up his vehicle’s engine oil. A passerby, apparently unaware of what he was doing, called 911 to report a “man tampering with a vehicle.” Minutes later, two patrol units arrived on the scene.
Bodycam footage shows officers approaching cautiously, ordering the man to “step away from the vehicle.” The confused driver complied immediately but was still detained after one officer claimed his “behavior looked suspicious.”
“I told them I was just adding oil — that’s literally what I was doing,” the man later explained. “They didn’t even look under the hood.”
Despite having car maintenance supplies clearly visible — including a funnel, oil container, and cloth — officers proceeded to handcuff him and search his vehicle. After several tense minutes, one officer finally checked the car’s registration and realized the man was the registered owner.
The man was released shortly after, but not before expressing frustration and embarrassment. “They made me feel like a criminal for taking care of my car,” he said.
Police later issued a statement acknowledging the misunderstanding, describing it as an “overly cautious response.” The department’s spokesperson admitted that while the officers acted on the report they received, “a more thorough assessment” could have prevented the situation from escalating.
“We regret that the citizen experienced distress,” the statement read. “Once officers confirmed he posed no threat, he was immediately released.”
Online, reactions have been swift and heated. Many users called the arrest “ridiculous,” while others criticized the department for failing to apply basic judgment before restraining an innocent man.
“This is what happens when fear replaces common sense,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “Imagine being arrested for taking care of your own car — unbelievable.”
Legal experts say this case highlights how overreactions to minor situations can quickly turn into unnecessary detentions. “If someone’s behavior doesn’t clearly pose a risk, officers should first observe and assess before escalating,” one defense attorney explained.
The man has since declined to pursue charges, saying he just wants an apology and assurance that no one else goes through what he did. “I’m not angry,” he said. “I just hope they learn from it.”
The story has since become a viral reminder that simple misunderstandings can spiral out of control, and that sometimes, a bit of patience — and a look under the hood — could save everyone a lot of trouble.
