A shocking video has surfaced showing a Warren Police officer cutting off a Detroit woman’s sewn-on hair weave while she sat restrained in a detention chair — sparking nationwide outrage and calls for accountability.

The footage, taken from a jail security camera, shows the woman being booked after a minor arrest. The officer, instead of following standard intake procedures, is seen using scissors to cut through the woman’s tightly sewn-in hair while she pleads for them to stop.

“Please don’t cut my hair, it’s sewn in!” the woman can be heard saying, visibly distressed.

The officer continues cutting, ignoring her protests, while other staff stand by watching.

The woman, a Detroit mother of three, later told reporters she felt “humiliated, violated, and dehumanized.” She said she had spent hours getting her hair professionally done just days earlier, and the weave was securely sewn to her natural hair — not a removable wig as the officer allegedly assumed.

Police initially defended the officer’s actions, claiming that removing hair extensions was part of safety protocol to prevent detainees from hiding contraband. However, public backlash quickly mounted as experts pointed out that sewn-in weaves cannot be easily removed without cutting natural hair, and that safer alternatives — such as inspections or handheld scanners — should have been used instead.

“This was not policy. This was humiliation,” said a civil rights attorney representing the woman. “There is no justification for cutting a woman’s hair without consent — especially when she was restrained and posed no threat.”

Civil rights activists across Michigan have since demanded disciplinary action against the officer and greater oversight of intake procedures involving women and people of color.

“Black women’s hair is not just about beauty — it’s about identity, culture, and dignity,” said a local community organizer. “This incident shows how deeply personal biases can turn into public humiliation.”

The Warren Police Department has since launched an internal investigation. The police chief released a statement saying the department is “reviewing all procedures” and “taking the matter seriously.” However, no disciplinary measures have been confirmed yet, further fueling public anger.

Online, the video has drawn millions of views and thousands of comments demanding justice. Hashtags like #HairIsNotAThreat and #JusticeForDetroitMom have been trending on social platforms, with users condemning what they see as an unnecessary abuse of power.

“You can’t claim safety when you’re destroying someone’s dignity,” one commenter wrote. “This is beyond unprofessional — it’s cruel.”

The woman’s legal team has filed a civil lawsuit against the city and the officer involved, seeking damages for emotional distress and violation of her rights. Meanwhile, advocacy groups are pushing for state legislation to ensure humane and respectful treatment during police processing.

As the investigation continues, this disturbing case has reignited national conversations about racial bias, police accountability, and respect for personal identity — showing once again that justice is not just about law enforcement, but about basic human respect.
