A routine traffic stop took a dramatic turn when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent was arrested for driving under the influence — after allegedly trying to use his federal status to avoid being taken into custody.

The incident began when highway patrol officers noticed a grey SUV swerving between lanes on a rural stretch of highway. Bodycam footage shows the driver rolling down his window, revealing what appeared to be an off-duty ICE agent. When questioned about his erratic driving, the man immediately flashed his credentials and said, “It’s fine — I’m federal.”

But the responding officer didn’t buy it. “Sir, being federal doesn’t put you above the law,” the officer replied calmly. The agent, who appeared visibly intoxicated, reportedly smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech. When asked if he had been drinking, he hesitated before muttering, “Just a couple.”

Officers asked him to step out of the vehicle for a field sobriety test, but the man initially refused, insisting, “You can’t do this to me — I work for the government.” After several minutes of tense exchange, officers eventually removed him from the vehicle and placed him under arrest.

According to the police report, his blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit. The situation escalated further when the agent allegedly warned the arresting officers that they were “making a huge mistake” and that “this would go up the chain.”

However, the officers stood firm. “We don’t care who you work for,” one officer said in the footage. “Right now, you’re just another driver under the influence.”

The ICE agency has since confirmed the man’s employment and released a brief statement: “We are aware of the incident involving one of our employees. The agency holds all personnel to the highest standards of conduct. The matter is under internal review.”

The agent, whose name has not been disclosed, was charged with DUI, resisting arrest, and misuse of credentials. He has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of both criminal and internal investigations.

Public reaction to the footage has been swift. Many praised the responding officers for their professionalism and refusal to give in to intimidation. “Finally, someone stood their ground,” one comment read. “No badge or title should be a free pass for breaking the law.”

Legal experts say the agent’s federal position could actually make the charges more severe, as law enforcement officers are expected to uphold — not violate — public safety laws.

As for the officer who made the arrest, the department commended him for maintaining composure under pressure. “This incident serves as a reminder that accountability applies to everyone,” said a spokesperson.

If convicted, the agent could face license suspension, heavy fines, and possible termination from ICE.

Even a badge couldn’t save him that day — proving once again that no one is above the law.
