The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced an urgent nationwide recall of cucumbers after a salmonella outbreak has sickened more than 20 people across multiple states. Health officials warn that the actual number of cases could be much higher, as many infections go unreported.

The outbreak has been traced back to cucumbers distributed in several grocery chains and food service suppliers. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, and can be especially dangerous for young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.

The FDA is advising anyone who purchased cucumbers in recent weeks to check packaging details and discard any potentially contaminated products immediately. They also recommend thoroughly washing and sanitizing any surfaces or utensils that may have come into contact with the produce.

Officials are working to identify the full distribution chain and prevent further cases. Hospitals in affected areas have already seen a rise in patients exhibiting symptoms consistent with salmonella poisoning.
