HONOLULU, HI — A powerful 8.7 magnitude earthquake has struck off the eastern coast of Russia, prompting immediate tsunami warnings across the Pacific, including Hawaii.
Emergency officials are urging residents and visitors in Hawaii to evacuate to higher ground immediately. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has confirmed that wave activity is expected and could reach shorelines within hours.
“This is not a drill,” said a spokesperson from Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency. “If you are near the coast, move inland and uphill now.”
The earthquake, which occurred in the Sea of Okhotsk, has already triggered alerts across parts of Japan and Alaska, but Hawaii is directly in the potential path of the resulting tsunami waves.
Officials are monitoring wave patterns closely, and updates will be provided as more data becomes available. Sirens have been activated in many coastal regions, and schools and businesses are closing for safety.
⚠️ What You Should Do Now:
- Move to higher ground or inland IMMEDIATELY.
- Stay away from beaches and coastal areas.
- Do NOT wait for sirens or visual confirmation.
- Follow instructions from local authorities and tune into emergency broadcasts.
Stay safe. Stay alert.
